What to Do When You Are Alone for the Holidays

Being alone for the holidays is a major challenge for many people. Holidays often conjure images of family, of warmth and the sharing of special time. Loneliness can be overwhelming when you have no one with whom to share holiday time.

Many people, however, miss the point of what holidays are really about and what makes them special. Holidays are not about what you GET – they are about what you GIVE. Many people are under the misconception that the joy of holidays is about what you receive rather than about what you share. Our hearts get filled with love when we give and share love, rather than from getting love.

Canada's Waste Reduction Week (Oct 15-21)

Canada’s Waste Reduction Week (WRW) occurs around mid-October and is a good time to reflect on how we, as individuals, can participate in waste management. Because some people are so overwhelmed with Earth’s problems, they feel that their contributions have no real consequence in the end. For others, social barriers can be an issue. A lady we once knew confessed that she did not want to be seen buying used items or being concerned with power use. She was worried people would see her as cheap – a scrooge – when the family was so affluent. Yet, she was very careful to be seen with recycling bins out on the curb on pick-up day, because THAT was thought to be the thing to do socially. WRW is a good time to put an end to these negative thoughts and feelings of false pride. Waste reduction is not about ego - it is about the health of the planet and of our nation.

Using Holidays To Put Some Extra Cheer

No matter your age or station in life, we all look forward to holidays. They give us a reason to decorate, celebrate, and most of all, spend.

Think back to any of last year's holidays. Did you buy some new decorations? Probably. Did you plan a party or host a dinner? Likely. Did you buy gifts or take advantage of special sales and promotions? Undoubtedly!

Well, instead of being on the spending end of this year's holidays, why not turn the tables and put on a promotion of your own? During the fall and winter holidays especially, people are jolly, joyous, and a little more willing to open their wallets.

Hosting a Holiday Party

Holidays are a wonderful time to gather with family and friends to share love and stories. The end of the year is a great time to catch up and share good spirits for the new year ahead. In fact, any time of year is a good excuse to get together with friends and family. If you are choosing to host a holiday party, there are many things to consider.

One of the first things to consider when hosting a holiday party is whether it will be formal, semi-formal or casual. This will affect everything from the invitations, the decorations, to the food. If you choose to host a formal event, the invitations should reflect this with dramatic colors and elegant elements such as ribbon or sparkling designs. For a semi-formal or casual event, choose an invitation that reflects the holiday being celebrated and uses more casual colors and design elements.

Depending on the holiday being celebrated there are a number of holiday party invitations that can be chosen. For winter holiday parties such as Christmas or Hanukkah, choose a holiday party invitation that best suits the mood and theme of the holiday party. There are a great number of invitations whether it is a summer time 4th of July party, or a fall Halloween party.

When and who to invite. Invitations should be sent to everyone invited to the party. Invitations should typically be sent out two weeks in advanced, or further in advanced for a very formal gathering. It is a very good idea to send out an RSVP with invitations for planning seating and food for the party.

Throwing a holiday party can be very fun. Holidays are a great time for friends and family to get together and relish in the festive time. Choosing a perfect holiday party invitation will help form the theme and the mood of the event and provide all guests with a truly entertaining party.

Affordable Luxury Gifts

It's possible to treat everyone on your list to a luxury gift without spending a fortune. You just have to know where to find great deals on luxury gifts and how to fit luxury gifts into your budget.  If you can’t afford to give an entire designer ensemble, opt for a less expensive accessory.  Instead of a mink coat, try mink fur-trimmed gloves.  A trip to a day spa, instead of an all-out spa vacation.  You get the idea.

How do you define a luxury gift?  Webster defines a luxury as (1) something adding to pleasure or comfort but not absolutely necessary (2) an indulgence in something that provides pleasure, satisfaction, or ease.  So you see, it isn’t always about the price.  A luxury gift can be anything that a person doesn’t find absolutely necessary and probably wouldn't buy for himself/herself but would love to receive.  It’s a special treat.

Here are several affordable luxury gifts that are sure to please:

To Celebrate Independence Day

No matter what your traditions are, it is important to celebrate Independence Day.  If you live in the INDIA, or are living outside the country and yearning for a bit of home, there is never a better time to celebrate this historic day.  Yet, what are some of the best ways to do it?  Is this your first 15th  of  August here?  Are you looking for a new way to celebrate?  Or, are you heading out on your own  the first time, looking to start a new tradition?

There are some things that just go hand in hand with Independence Day.  You just have to have a picnic, outdoors, under the blazing  sun.  But, there is more to it than just that.  How about the people you are with?  What about where you are at?  Don’t forget the food.  Let’s break it down.

Traditionally, your 15th  of  August celebration will happen out of doors.  But, this is not necessary if the weather is not right for it.  The most traditional of examples of a celebration is a BBQ in which people come to share in good foods and the beautiful weather.  It can happen at your home, at a local park, down by the beach or virtually any place that is suitable.  Here is a list of things to think about when planning a get together.

Location.  Find the right location; make arrangements with park officials if necessary.  Make sure there is enough seating, a place to get out of the sun and activities to keep everyone busy.

Food.  Plan for easy to make and eat foods.  Finger foods work best as people usually are not looking to sit down with a knife and china at this type of a celebration.  Look for a few options for everyone, including some that may not enjoy meats, something for those that are looking for alcoholic beverages and a variety of foods.  Make it a potluck for an even easier celebration.

Something to do.  When it comes to the 15th  of  August , you do have to give everyone something to do. Whether that is a sport like volleyball or basketball, swimming, or just some fun crafts for kids, get them all busy and having a good time.

Celebrating the 15th  of  August  should be fun and easy to do.  Do not over think it and keep it a light atmosphere and you all will have a great time.
